On a sunny Saturday afternoon last summer we decided we wanted to find a nice patio in our neighbourhood to relax and enjoy a beverage and a bite to eat. In our pre-baby days Sugarbowl would have been the obvious choice so we decided to give it a go with our 9-month-old baby in tow.
Sugarbowl is known for its great beer selection – not exactly the kind of place that comes to mind when you think of family-friendly establishments. It’s a popular university hangout and on any given day you will find it packed with 20-something students. On the afternoon we visited the demographics were as expected.
However, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant does have high chairs and the staff were quick to find us an appropriate spot on the patio and set up a high chair for our little guy. We were then able to sit back and enjoy a drink and a snack while our son cooed at the other patrons and stole bites of my lamb burger.
Both the patio and the inside of the restaurant are pretty tightly packed with seating, so we opted to fold up our umbrella stroller and leave it on the sidewalk, leaned up against the patio railing. I definitely wouldn’t recommend trying to navigate this place with a large stroller!
We were quite happy with how our first Sugarbowl outing turned out and have been back several times since with our son in tow. While the patio is obviously closed for the season, but the cozy indoor seating is nice on a cold winter day. It’s probably not the best place to have your entire moms group meet up, but it’s definitely doable with just one baby.
