Story Walks
Mill Creek Adventure Walk
What: A FREE festival adventure! Follow the animated, glowing paths to find Aurora, Queen of the Northern Lights in a winter meadow. Along the way meet characters from the story, played by 12 local actors.
Why: Enjoy a winter’s eve as a family. Make a lantern, warm up beside a fire and sip hot chocolate. Follow-up by colouring in this downloadable book.
Where: Mill Creek Ravine Park. Trail starts just north of Mill Creek Pool, 82nd Avenue and 95A Street, and continues for a one-kilometre loop. {Map}
When: Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28, 7 – 11 pm
TIP: There will be two paths to follow. One that will be stroller friendly and a second one that will be perfect for pulling a sled. Or better yet you can wear your babe and not be limited as to where you can roam.
Year of the Dragon
Lunar New Year Firecrackers Parade
What: A Chinese New Year celebration featuring lion dances, dragon dance, and firecrackers.
Why: Everyone loves a parade. Especially kids.
Where: Chinatown, 97 Street from 105 Avenue to 107A Avenue
When: Sunday, January 29. 12 – 3pm
Shop and Support
The PPDA Mommy Event
What: A shopping tradeshow to bring awareness to and raise funds for postpartum depression.
Why: At the very least, go and show other moms that you care about them and their mental health.
Where: West Edmonton Mall, Phase 1. Hallway and Centre Stage near The Bay.
When: Saturday, January 28. 12 – 6pm
Weekend Winter Wonderland
Metropolis Winter Festival
What: This festival runs every weekend through Family Day in mid-February. A variety of activities including winter food, music, live entertainment and interactive exhibits are offered.
Why: Slide on the 44-foot slide ($3) and make a craft in the Children’s Pavilion. Then stop into the Taste of Winter pavilion for dinner.
Where: Churchill Square
When: Friday, January 20 to Sunday, January 2 and every weekend until Family Day.
Did you hear a Who?
Seussical
What: The world of Dr. Seuss comes alive in this colourful, musical production. Horton has heard a Who, and it’s up to him to protect an entire village from certain doom. Recommended for children 5 years of age and up
Why: This is the last weekend to catch this popular show.
Where: Citadel Theatre, Shoctor Theatre
