Introducing: Jody Spencer | Because Edmonton Cares

Name: Jody Spencer
About You: I am a wife of 8 years and a stay-at-home mom for the past 5 years. Prior to having children I worked for The Mustard Seed in Calgary. Founder of Because Edmonton Cares.
Parent To: My daughter, 5, and my son, almost 4, who I affectionately call Turkey and Ham.
Resident in Edmonton since: Most of my life, with a 9 year stop-over in Calgary ;)

Why you love living in Edmonton: This city is bustling with energy and exciting things to do! I love how Edmonton celebrates and embraces multiculturalism and the arts; It means there's something fun to do every weekend.

Favourite thing to do with your kids in Edmonton: We love checking out the events taking place each weekend and try to take the kids to something a little out of the ordinary. The kids love festivals, art/craft shows, farmers markets, etc.  I also like to hit the zoo during the week so it's not so busy.

Your favourite place to shop: Edmonton has so many hidden gems! I love Floc Boutique, Miss Boss, Upperlane Living, and Katwalk Shoes. I also love shopping online with Edmonton owned companies like Kula Klips, Sprogs.ca and CHILDish.

Hidden Edmonton gem that you never thought you'd share: I always share. I love this city and am always out to help people see why! Everything Cheese has a great selection of cheeses, crackers, pasta and sauce - yum! As voted by my kids, and by me, Cakes by Candace has the BEST cupcakes in town.

Essential items in your purse: Tic Tacs (because the kids think they're a treat), crayons, mini-activity books, hand cream and about half a dozen pens/pencils

Favourite Children's Book: Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. Though I can't get through the book without sobbing.

Five things you couldn't live without: Starbucks Chai, books, my phone, my bubble bath, and my amazing family and friends.

One piece of advice: After having kids it's difficult make time to go on dates with your significant other but it's important you spend time together as a couple. You picked this person to spend the rest of your life with so that relationship needs some nurturing too.

Why did you start Because Edmonton Cares? I have a firm belief that everyone out there wants to make this community a better place. Most people will act on that desire if you make it easy enough for them to say YES! I started Because Edmonton Cares to partner caring individuals with opportunities to give back in the community without it being a huge commitment or effort to participate. It gives people a chance to volunteer in a group setting, to get exposed to a large variety of non-profit organizations in Edmonton, and to commit only when it fits into their schedule. It's win/win for the community and the individual!

Jody Spencer is a selfless woman, dedicated mom and a major asset to our community. Jody leads by example and makes it easy for others to volunteer their time through short, organized events through Because Edmonton Cares (BEC). Edmonton charities benefit from the work, as do the volunteers who receive reciprocal “it feels good to give” bursts of joy. Thanks Jody for making it easier for us busy families to give back.

Join the BEC Facebook group, follow BEC on Twitter and signup for the next volunteer event on January 14 to serve hot chocolate for donations to YESS (Youth Emergency Shelter Society) at Ice on Whyte.

p.s. Jody, I cry when I read “Love You Forever” too. ~Jen
