Kids' Fish Fascination | Where To Find Aquariums in Edmonton

There’s something about a fish tank that fascinates a young boy or girl’s mind. From saltwater sea creatures to the everyday goldfish, my son’s favourite word to say is - ‘ish!

It all started one cold evening at the Ronald McDonald House Storybook Ball event in March 2012 at the Delta South Edmonton Hotel. My wife and I had been to a wedding there in November 2010 so we knew the big bright fish tank was fun to look at.

What we didn’t know was how much fun it was for a 1-year-old to look at!

Anytime he got a little restless during the event, out we went to the fish tank. There, we were joined by half-a-dozen other little tykes and toddlers oohing and awing about the glowing tropical fish darting in and out of the rocks and coral.

It sparked my wife and I to get a fish tank for ourselves - much smaller of course. A 5-gallon. It’s been an up-and-down adventure through the summer though. We’ve lost a couple fish along the way as little Mason heads over to a now empty fish tank and inquisitively asks, “‘ish?”

We’re letting it run and cleaning it out in hopes of getting a couple more back in this winter.

In the meantime, we enjoy visiting restaurants, malls and places of business that house fishtanks.

Some of our favourite places besides the Delta South Edmonton Hotel have included:
  • West Edmonton Mall’s aquarium behind the Tim Horton’s
  • Sweet Mango restaurant in the Mill Creek area
  • Several Smitty’s restaurants in Edmonton
  • Telus World of Science
A trip to some of the pet stores in town like PJ’s Pets, Big Al’s Aquarium Super Centre and PetSmart have entertained him as well.

Do any of you have similar places you and the little ones like to visit or eat at that house fish? Do any of you have fish tanks at home?

Many libraries have aquariums. Woodcroft and Lois Hole do for sure. Great idea for a post

I love this more than I should! You're right, kids LOOOOVE fish tanks. This is a perfect, and yet simple blog post that makes me love City and Baby even more (if that's possible)

I agree that fish are fascinating for children. They are in awe at how they move through the water so effortlessly. The movement of the fish are also very calming for them, much more so that a television where the movement is often to quick for the young ones to keep up with. My company Aquabotanika provides a great environment for fish and animals. My specialty low maintenance aquariums come in 14 different sizes and is called the Aquaplantarium because it is an aquarium, terrarium, watergarden and paludarium all in one unit. You can house tropical fish, crabs, shrimps, frogs, crayfish and even small chameleons in harmony in this unit. I am currently marketing them to libraries, dentists, doctors, retirement homes, vet clinics, and virtually any professional office. The sound of the water fall in the unit is also very calming for young and old. Please visit my website for additional information on these amazing one of a kind aquariums. www.aquabotanika.com. I have a showroom that can be visited to see one of these in action. Please call me at 780-803-0282 for a personal viewing and demonstration. Have a great day! Mike
