May long weekend marks the start of gardening, camping and other outdoor pursuits. We can't wait to get our hands dirty with our first veggie garden this weekend, but will also be out and about Edmonton. Here is your round up of family-friendly events happening this weekend.

Fort Edmonton Park –Opening Weekend
What: Fort Edmonton kicks off their 2012 season with many special activities.
Why: The train, children’s tea, bannock and live music will delight the kids.

Tip: I highly recommend taking the shuttle from Neil Crawford Provincial Centre (South Campus LRT station). It’s door-to-door service. No jostling in the parking lot and the kids will love the bus ride. {details}
Get Down to the Funky Sound
Hip Hop in the Park
What: Hip Hop festival featuring 20 artists - music, dance, graffiti and more.
Why: This jam is suitable for all ages. Bring the kids and celebrate Edmonton’s great Hip Hop talent.
Where: Louise McKinney Riverfront Park. 9529 Grierson Hill. Parking is limited.

Rhythm and Rhymes
All Day Sunday
What: Painting, rhythm and sound are the inspiration for this All Day Sunday.
Why: Discover line, shape and rhythm in Gallery spaces with interactive family tours, experiment with drawing with Gallery Educators and learn new rhythmic dance moves in the Atrium.
Where: Art Gallery of Alberta. 2 Sir Winston Churchill Square. Children 6 and under are free. Adults $12.50.
When: Sunday, May 20, 2012. 12 - 4pm
Leaps, Kicks and Turns
Celebration of Dance
What: The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village opens for the season with a major dance extravaganza featuring over 400 Ukrainian dancers from across Alberta.
Why: In addition to the great music and dancing, there are horse-drawn wagons, sheep sheering, gardening, village market and Ukrainian food.
