Holiday Events in Edmonton 

Looking for something festive to do with your family? We've collected 25 events around the Edmonton region. From free holiday lights to beauitful concerts. Parades, hay rides, crafts and visits with Santa. There is a lot to do in our vibrant city.

Edmonton Christmas Show 2013
What:
This consumer tradeshow also offers entertainment for families. Magic shows, face painting, photos with Santa, petting zoo, pony rides, live music and meet Dora and Diego live.  Children under 8 are free. Adults $15 (door) or $12 (advance).
Where:
Edmonton Expo Centre, Northlands, Edmonton.
When:
Thursday, November 28 – Sunday, December 1, 2013.

 

Festival of Trees
What: Sparkling trees and tons of kids’ activities, some free and some paid. Decorate a cookie, trim a mini tree, visit the simulated hospital, write a letter to Santa at the post office, listen to holiday stories and visit a special shop for ‘children only’ to buy <$5 gifts for family with help from elves. Proceeds support the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.
Where:  Shaw Conference Centre, 9797 Jasper Ave, Edmonton.
When: Thursday, November 28 – Sunday, December 1, 2013. 

Tip: Thursday is family night. First 200 families to complete a scavenger hunt wins a prize. Kids under 12 are free on Thursday night.

 

A Christmas Carol
What: Edmonton’s Favourite Holiday Tradition continues for an unprecedented fourteenth year.  With an unforgettable story, rich characters, and dazzling special effects, A Christmas Carol is exceptional family entertainment. Recommended for kids 7+
Where: Maclab Theatre - Citadel Theatre, 9828 101A Avenue, Edmonton
When: November 30 – December 23, 2013.

 

A Charlie Brown Christmas with David Benoit
What:
David Benoit is a Grammy nominated contemporary jazz pianist and composer with a passion for the music of original Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi.
Where: Festival Place, Sherwood Park. $45 - $55. Available online now
When: November 30, 2013. 7:30pm 


Jingle On – Indoor Santa Claus Parade
What:
Mascots, dancing groups, marching bands, and floats will work their way through the downtown pedways. Santa, of course, will be there too.

Sunday, December 1, 2013. 10am – 12pm.

 

Christmas Reflections
What: View charming Christmas displays, savour a warm cup of cider or hot chocolate, visit costumed interpreters along 1905 and 1920 Street, sample baking from the wood stove, take a sleigh ride, and create Christmas crafts.
Where: Fort Edmonton Park, Edmonton
When: Wednesday, December 4 – Monday, December 23, 2013.

 

Celebrate the Season
What:
Listen to a choir performance in the Legislature rotunda followed by the Premier’s ceremonial holiday light-up of the grounds’ colourful lights. Take your skates for a spin around the ice rink on the south lawn and enjoy hot chocolate too. Choir concerts happen at 12pm, 7pm and 8pm through till Dec 23.
Where: Alberta Legislature, 10800 - 97 Avenue
When: Thursday, December 5  - December 23, 2013.

 

Candy Cane Lane
What:
Wander down 10 blocks of beautifully decorated homes or indulge in a sleigh ride. Please bring donations for the Edmonton food bank.
Where: 148 St. between 100 Ave. & 92 Ave. 
When: December 6, 2013 – January 2, 2014.

 

Hay Rides and Photos with Santa
What: Get your face painted, colour a holiday image, take a free hay ride, get your photo taken with Santa ($) then head over to DQ for free hot chocolate with coupon. (While supplies last)
Where: Callingwood Market Place
When: Saturday, December 14 (wrong date before 12), 2013. 11am – 4pm

 

Snowflake Festival Light Up
What:
Light up the holidays in St. Albert.  This event has tons of things to do. Decorate a cookie, take a wagon ride, pet live reindeer, sip hot chocolate, watch a movie – Kung Fu Panda Holiday or Shrek the Halls, make a Christmas craft, and so much more. Christmas in the Heartland
What:
Ice carvings, sleigh rides, tree light-ups, fireworks, festival markets and other activities will be held across eight community halls and churches. Event is free.
Where: Various locations in Stathcona County
When: Saturday, November 30 – Sunday, December 1, 2013.

 

Whyte Christmas Sleigh Ride Shuttle
What:
Take a one (or two) horse open sleigh around Whyte Avenue. Free parking all day today at the South Scona Parking Lot on 105 Street right across from The Keg.
Where: Whyte Avenue. Map to be posted on their website. 
When:  Saturday, November 30, December 7, 14 and 21, 2013. 1 – 5pm

 

Monthly Mini Model Build
What: Learn how to build a Lego Rocking Horse model then take it home. One free per child while supplies last (approx. 250). Event is open to children ages 6-14 only. (Boo. I was looking forward to making one!) 
Where: Lego Store, Southgate Mall. 
When: Tuesday, December 3, 2013. 5pm.

 

Christmas Cookies at North Pole Place: WEM Playtime
What: Santa’s elves need help decorating their cookies. First 100 kids will be able to create their own Christmas treat for free. *while supplies last. 
Where: West Edmonton Mall. North Pole Place. (Centre Stage outside Hudson’s Bay)
When: December 3, 2013. 10am – 12pm.

 

Velveteen Rabbit
What: Watch the story of Willow and her father as they dive into her favourite book, The Velveteen Rabbit. Willow leads her father and the audience through her own version of the rabbit’s quest to become real. (This is likely more appropriate for older children due to the sad themes.)
Where: Fort Edmonton Park, The Capitol Theatre.
When: December 6 – 24, 2013.

 

A Merry Mercer Collective
What: Shop for handmade goods by local artists, crafters, designers, bakers and writers at this favourite market. There is also children’s crafts and a treat to help keep the little ones entertained.
Where: Mercer Warehouse 10359 104 Street.
When: December 7-8 and December 14-15. 10am – 5pm .

 

Saturday Morning Holiday Movies
What: Family Favourites movies continue through December with Holiday entertianment – The Polar Express (Dec 8), Authur Christmas (Dec 14) and Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Dec 21). Check Common Sense Media to learn more about the story and see if it’s age appropriate for your kids.
Where: Participating Cineplex Theatres – Edmonton North, Edmonton South and Sherwood Park. Tickets only $2.50.
When:  Saturday mornings at 11am.

 

A Christmas Past
What: Enjoy the sweet harmonies of seasonal music and taste cookies baked in a wood burning oven. Visit the historic kitchen and sample some hot apple cider too.

Edmonton Oil Kings “Sing for Santa”
What:
Enjoy a family holiday themed game with extra entertainment in addition to watching the Edmonton Oil Kings take on the Medicine Hat Tigers (Dec 8) or Saskatoon Blades (Dec 15).
Where: Rexall Place
When: Sunday, December 8 and 15, 2013. 4pm.

 

Luminaria
What: Thousands of hand-lit candles sparkle along the paths of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden. A cappella singers, ice sculptures, hot apple cider at the bonfires, and illuminated “snow sprites”.  Buy your tickets early to avoid lineups.
Where: Devonian Botanic Garden, 5 kms north of Devon on Hwy 60.
When: Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8, 2013. 5pm – 9pm.

 

Jack Frost Holiday
What:
Kick off your holiday fun with a craft, tours and Christmas cactus. Enjoy ringing hand-bells and enjoy the warmth of the holiday season as you take in the Feature Pyramid, 'Jack Frost Nipping at Your Nose'.

When: Sunday, December 8, 2013. 12 – 4pm.

 

Snowman Crafts: WEM Playtime
What:
Enjoy a morning of free holiday crafts with Momstown Edmonton that you can take home with you.  
Where: West Edmonton Mall. North Pole Place. (Centre Stage outside Hudson’s Bay)
When: December 10, 2013. 10am – 12pm.

 

Holiday Kids Night
What: Go watch Despicable Me 2, make a craft, get a glitter tattoo, chat with Santa and enjoy Christmas popcorn.
Where: Bonnie Doon Mall
When: Saturday, December 14, 2014. 5 – 8pm.

 

Build a Snowman Napkin Holder
What: Learn how to build a snowman napkin holder with easy to follow step-by-step instructions during this free workshop. (Best for kids 4 to 12 years of age)
Where: Participating Home Depot locations. Register online.
When: Saturday, December 14, 2013. 10am

The Singing Christmas Tree
What: 35 foot Singing Christmas Tree.  Adorned with thousands of glimmering lights, filled with 150 singers, all accompanied by a live orchestra. Plus great dance numbers.
Where: Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium
When: December 19 – 22, 2013.

What: The town of Bethlehem is recreated in a 11,640 square foot gymnasium. This event is free and a gift from WECA and its event Sponsors to those living in the Edmonton area.
