What To Do This May Long Weekend In Edmonton With Kids | May 15 – 18

Photo by Aikawa Ke via Flickr creative commons
Hooray ! It’s the May long weekend and, in my mind, the reliable start to spring. Time to put away the winter gear and pull out the sunscreen.

It’s also marks the start of the outdoor farmers market season. 124 street Grand Market opens on Thursday evening and 104 street City Market on Saturday. Earth’s General Store on 104 street is offering 15% off to celebrate the market’s opening.

Telus World of Science’s highly anticipated Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibit also opens on Saturday. It features 7 life-size, moving, roaring dinosaurs plus hands on activities. Go on Saturday and kids 12 & under receive a stuffy dinosaur (while supplies last). Also you can create your own fossil casts just like paleontologists.

Continuing on the theme of openings. Fort Edmonton Park also opens for season on Saturday. New this year, they’ve bundled all attraction costs into one all-inclusive price. The price is higher but now you and your kids can enjoy all the ol’time rides without having to buy extra tickets.  There will be additional opening day activities but the train will not be running due to track replacement. Take street cars, horse-drawn wagons or bring a stroller to help get around.

On Monday, Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village celebrates their season opening with their annual Celebration of Dance. Go early for a pancake breakfast. Enjoy Ukrainian dancing. See the unveiling of five newly restored historic buildings. Take a wagon rides while exploring the historic village.

The FIFA Women's World Cup Trophy Tour comes to West Edmonton Mall this weekend. Get your picture taken with the cup, play a little foosball and take your best shot. Do you have your tix for the games in June & July?

This weekend we’re also looking forward to riding bikes, playing outside, planting the garden and exploring our city.

See you out and about,

What To Do In Edmonton This Weekend With Kids | May 1 - 3, 2015

Hello from sunny Florida.  (Though yesterday it was warmer in Edmonton than here in Orlando.) I’m on a much-needed vacay but thought I’d post a few ideas of things to do with your family this weekend.

Here’s what’s happening:

Our favourite moms' group, Momstown, is holding a community celebration and transforming the ice rink at West Edmonton Mall on Sunday. Go enjoy kid-sized houses, a royal tea party, get flipbooks or photobooth pictures (in support of LLSC), make a fun craft, let your kids drive a car and more.

May is biology month at the Telus World of Science. This weekend visit the The Body Fantastic Gallery to learn about organ function and see a dissection.

The Shrine Circus is in town from April 30 – May 3. Proceeds from the event actually goes to help Al Shamal Shriners local projects.

Be a tourist in your own city with Jane’s Walks this weekend. This event features a number of walk and talks about Edmonton’s communities. Walks focus on different topics including art, history, architecture, urban design and development. If you can’t make a scheduled walk, check out the smartphone self-guided tour of Churchill Square. You’ll be surprised what you learn about Edmonton.

If you’re enjoying being outside and want to teach your kids about taking care of their community, why not take part in the Mill Creek Clean Up.

On the theme of community beautifying, check out the micro-grant that Make Something Edmonton is offering for individuals, families and groups who want to do a mini-make over of a space in their community. I’ve pinned a bunch of ideas so think about what you could do in your neighbourhood and apply by May 11.

If you’re looking to do some shopping, the Butterdome Spring Craft Sale is happening May 1 – 3.  There will be lots of Mother Day gift ideas there – for you or your mom.

Need baby clothes, toys or gear for summer? Check out the three I’ve Outgrown It Sales happening this weekend. Details are on this City and Baby post.

Let the outdoor market season begin! Callingwood’s Farmers’ Market opens on May 3. On opening day they’ll have live music, a petting zoo, bouncy castle, face painting and balloon twisting.  City Market Downtown doesn’t open for another two weeks, but we’re looking forward to having them back on 104 Street for the season.

Other things you need to know:

Downtown Road Closures

In the upcoming months, there will be some downtown street closures to accommodate the development of the LRT South-East Valley Line, Rodgers Arena, the new Royal Alberta Museum and other exciting city-building projects. As a result many downtown bus routes will change as of April 26. The City of Edmonton has posted the details

Make Voting A Priority: May 5

In the last Alberta Provincial Election in 2012 there was only a 54.4% turn out. That’s really sad and we can do better. I encourage you to right now put an appointment in your calendar to vote on May 5. Schedule it in. Make it a priority.

If you are unsure of anything about the election – your riding, where to vote, what ID you need to vote, if you’ve moved…. Answers are on the Elections Alberta website or you can call them at 1-877-422-8683.

Dave Cournoyer, an Edmonton writer and political watcher, has assembled a list of candidates along with their website and social media profiles. I’ve found it to be a useful tool to be able to research and follow candidates.
