local mommies need your help

The Junior League of Edmonton has taken on the challenge of collecting 90,000 diapers in 90 days for the Edmonton Food Bank and Terra Centre for Pregnant & Parenting Teens.

It turns out that the diaper need is desperate. The supply is so low and the demand is so high, that the Edmonton Food Bank sometimes can only allocate 7 diapers per WEEK!  So moms are resorting to keeping soiled diapers on their babies and in some cases scraping out poop and reusing. It's a terrible situation from a hygienic perspective, but it is also a mental and emotional stress for moms who are doing their best to care for their children.

If you are willing to donate to this important cause, and help other moms in our community, you can bring diapers to drop them off at one of the many collection sites until the end of November.

I've been using J'Adore Dance's drop off location (5708 111 Street) because the owner, Jessica  Griffin, committed to donating $500 cash if we collect 5000 diapers at her location. Last week we surpassed this amount! Kudos to Jessica for her ongoing dedication to helping women and the community.

I am so proud of my circle of friends and family who have already donated over 4000 diapers, which currently account for about 25% of the campaign. As of Oct 4, the campaign facebook page reported 16,216 diapers have been collected.

If you want more information visit the Junior League website and read an informative study, that Huggies® sponsored, about the impact of diaper need. This local campaign is in conjunction with Huggies Every Little Bottom initative that is North American wide. Actress Ellen Pompeo (Dr. Meredith Grey from Grey’s Anatomy) has come on board as an ambassador for the initiative. Great to see that momentum is building.

Please consider sharing this with your friends and family. Even a single diaper sample would help!

wiggles and giggles

Australian children’s music group and TV sensation, The Wiggles, is touring to Edmonton in October. These four guys are ‘cool’, or so thinks my three year old as she laughs at their silly antics. Sam (Yellow), Murray (Red), Jeff (Purple) and Anthony (Blue) have the under-four crowd wrapped around their little pinkies with their bright personalities, singing and dancing.

Mommies who prefer educational programming will be happy to know that Anthony, Murray, and Greg (no longer with the group) met while studying Early Childhood Education at Sydney s Macquarie University. Their catchy songs and entertaining shows are created with child development in mind. If that’s not enough, they are also UNICEF ambassadors and the guys are easy on the eyes. (Dibs on Anthony!)  Watch out mommies, you might end up signing along with your child and throwing your panties on stage.  “Quack, quack, quack, quack, cock-a-doodoodle-doo”.

hosting as complex as buying baby gear?

There are so many web platforms and hosts available  trying to find one to host City + Baby is like trying to figure out what stroller to buy. Many function just fine, but there is certain criteria needed to fit my lifestyle and goals. There is also cost to consider, but at the end of the day paying a bit more is worth it if you have all the functionality needed; especially if the design is beautiful too. This is a quick entry to 'test drive' SquareSpace, which was recommended to me by a good friend Kendall Barber who runs the newest, hottest Edmonton blog - City + Dale. So far so good!
