Thanksgiving Long Weekend Already

There is so much to be thankful for this weekend, besides having a long weekend. I am thankful for my family and friends, and that includes you. Knowing that the work and love I pour into City and Baby is helping so many families to enjoy Edmonton is so fufilling. Thank you for reading, sharing and commenting.

Equestrian Ballet 

Cavalia
What: Cavalia is a unique mix of equestrian and performing arts, multimedia and special effects.  
Why: An unbelievable sight. Beautiful horses, live music, acrobatic stunts and dance combined into an awesome experience.  
Where: Edmonton City Centre Airport, White Big Top
When:  Extended to October 21, 212. Saturday and Sunday matinees too.

Lets Go Eskimos 

Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Edmonton Eskimos
What: Fall football fun. 
Why: Friday is Minor Football night so there will be extra kids in the stands. Plus keep an eye out for AMA’s School Safety Patrollers handing out Go Esk flags. 
Where: Commonwealth Stadium. Take transit for free when you show your ticket. 
When:  Friday, October 5, 2012. 7pm

Boo-tiful Fall

Haunted Pumpkin Festival
What: Celebrate pumpkin harvest at the farm. 
Why: Go to see the pumpkin cannon. Make a FREE scarecrow making. Enjoy live music, mimes and mazes. The petting farm is always a favourite too.
Where: Prairie Gardens and Adventure Farm 
When: Weekends from Sept 29 - Oct 28, 2012

Tip:  Bring your camera. There are sure to be beautiful moments and fall colours to capture.

Home Grown

Farmers Markets
What: Thanksgiving marks the last weekend for most outdoor markets.
Why:  Stock up on staples and goodies for Thanksgiving.
Where:  St. Albert Farmers Market (Sat), City Market Downtown (Sat), Callingwood Market (Sun)

Corny Fun

Edmonton Corn Maze
What: A beautiful way to spend an afternoon outdoors.
Why: Kids will love their massive jumping pillow and friendly animals. We love that they donate $1 to the Edmonton Food Bank from each admission. 
Where: South Spruce Grove area. Map. Admission: Adults $10. Child (5- 11) $8. Child <5 Free.
When: Friday – Monday this long weekend. Open until Oct 20, 2012.

Things To Do With Kids Over September Long Weekend | August 31 – September 3

The September long weekend is typically known as the last summer hurrah as the city returns to work and school after lovely summer. And we've had a gorgeous, hot summer this year. 

Don't be sad though. The 2012 Labour Day Long Weekend has a bunch of fun events happening in and around Edmonton.  If we've missed listing any, please post them in the comments for other City and Baby readers.

Birthday Party

Party Under The Dome
What: Celebrate the 100th birthday of Alberta´s Legislature Building with a 1912 Family Fair in the daytime and a Centennial Concert and fireworks spectacular in the evening.
Why: Free family activities and entertainment including a penny carnival, roving performers, live music, antique vehicles, Twizzlers, pumch and of course birthday cake.
Where: Alberta´s Legislature grounds
When: Sunday, September 2, 2012.  Family fair runs 11am – 4:30pm. 

Once Upon a Time

T.A.L.E.S Storytelling Festival
What: Storytellers situated throughout Fort Edmonton Park will share fictional and true tales.
Why: St. Anthony Church on 1905 street is a dedicated site for stories for children. Check out the Sunday and Monday schedules for specifics.
Where: Fort Edmonton Park. Take the Park and Ride service.
When: Sunday, September 2 and Monday, September 3. 1 – 5pm

Under The Stars

Movies on the Square
What: Three blockbuster movies shown on back-to-back nights on a 3-story inflatable screen. 
- Friday, August 31: Pirates, Band of Misfits 
- Saturday, September 1: The Lorax
- Sunday, September 4: The Adventures of TIN TIN
Why: Grab some snacks and cosy-up together for a special late night treat.
Where: Churchill Square, Downtown.

When: Pre-show entertainment starts at 7:30pm.
Feature movie starts at dusk (approx. 8:30 pm).

Tip: This event is weather dependent. Call 311 if the weather is poor to see if the event is still happening.

For the Love of Music

2012 Symphony Under the Sky
What: The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra wraps up the summer festival season with four days of music in the park.
Why: Bring a blanket, sit on the grass and enjoy the symphony in a family-friendly atmosphere. On Sunday, there is a separate Family Matinee followed by a fundraiser BBQ for ESO Education Programs.
Where: Hawrelak Park, Heritage Amphitheatre
When: Friday, August 31 – Monday, September 3.

Equine Extravaganza

Wild Pink Yonder Trails End
What: Help celebrate the Riders of the Wild Pink Yonder’s journey end and raise funds for breast cancer research and education. Admission is by donation.
Why: Horse lover heaven. Enjoy a wagon ride, let your child ride a pony ($2), be amazed at trick riders and be entertained by a Lord Strathcona’s Horse musical ride 
Where: Whitemud Equine Centre Show Grounds, 12504 Fox Drive.
When: Saturday, September 1 and Sunday September 2, 2012. 10am – 5pm.

Oh so Corny

Corn Fest
What: A celebration of all things corn.
Why: Go for the legendary corn mazes (there is a smaller maze for young kids too), corny jokes, veggie art, petting zoo, live music and hands-on corn doll craft. Make sure to try some sweet corn, or cornbread at the concession.

When: Saturday, September 1 – Monday, September 3, 2012
